Many people put off dental visits due to negative experiences earlier in life, uncomfortable procedures as adults, or common portrayals of dentistry in television and movies. Even when symptoms such as oral pain appear, fear can still prevent people from getting the care they need. Our office recognizes these concerns and is here to support you. Whether you are coming in for a routine cleaning or a complete smile transformation, we provide sedation dentistry options to help ensure a calm and comfortable experience.
Sedation Services
Patients who feel anxious at the thought of sitting in the dental chair can receive care in a calm, comfortable environment. Our office offers multiple relaxation dentistry options designed to reduce fear, increase comfort, and help patients feel at ease throughout their visit.
Relaxation Dentistry Options:
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedation dentistry helps relieve anxiety without the use of needles or intravenous tubes. Many patients who traditionally have difficulty getting numb find treatment easier when they are relaxed.
About an hour before the appointment, the patient takes a small pill that may cause drowsiness. A companion should accompany the patient to the office. Upon arrival, the patient is escorted to a comfortable room and covered with a warm blanket.
During the procedure, the doctor and clinical team complete treatment while monitoring vital signs to support patient safety. After the appointment, the companion will drive the patient home so they can rest as the medication wears off.
Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is one of the most frequently used sedation methods in dentistry. It works quickly, helping patients feel relaxed within minutes of inhalation.
The depth of sedation can be adjusted throughout the appointment. Once the gas is stopped, its effects wear off quickly, allowing most patients to drive themselves home and resume normal activities.
Nitrous oxide does not involve needles and is considered very safe for most patients, with minimal side effects.
Local Anesthetic
For certain dental procedures, a local anesthetic may be used to numb specific areas of the mouth. This medication is applied to the gum or inner cheek to prevent pain or discomfort during treatment.
Lidocaine is a commonly used local anesthetic, though other options are available. Numbing typically lasts several hours and wears off gradually.
Because patients remain fully conscious, they can respond during treatment and usually drive themselves home or return to work after the appointment.
